   Born in Bazoches-au-Houlme, Orne, Rémy de Gourmont was a leader of the symbolist movement and founded the important French journal Le Mercure de France (1889). A member of the staff at the Bibliothèque nationale, he was forced to resign because of a subversive article that he supposedly had written. An epicurean in search of beauty, like joris-karl huysmans, he is the author of Le Latin mystique, Les Poètes de l'antiphonaire et la symbolique au Moyen Âge (1892), and other works that represent the symbolist ideal (Esthétique de la langue française, 1899; La Culture des idées, 1900; Promenades littéraires, 7 volumes, 1904-13; Promenades philosophiques, 3 volumes, 1905-09).
